CACTUS JACK ** USA 2022 Dir: Chris Thornton & Jay Thornton. 80 mins I’d been looking forward to watching this film as I often enjoy the mockumentary and found footage films. Whilst this was a well made film, I don’t think the content was my sort of thing. We meet Cactus Jack when an amateur documentarian sets out to make a film about him. When he begins filming, Jack launches into a hateful tirade. Whilst the character seems to be an off the scale extremist, yet he is quite ordinary for the world we live in. R. Michael Gull was…

BAE WOLF ** USA 2022 Dir: David Axe. 87 mins In 500AD Denmark, a monster terrorises the people of Heorot by beheading some of their townsfolk. This was a bizarre film to say the least. With an old school setting, this looked like it was going to be great. Unfortunately, the script used a laid back modern language that didn’t fit with the style of the film. It may not aim to be taken seriously due to it being a parody, but it seemed unsure about the direction it wanted to go in. Even a comedy like this needs to…

NOTHING ELSE *** USA 2021 Dir: Timoth Conrad. 70 mins A strong opening credits starts NOTHING ELSE off on an excellent footing as two strangers find themselves trapped together as they try to work out what happened to lead them to the room. This was a repetitive film that became a little tiresome at times. Thankfully it has a great premise and an original outcome that makes this interesting. I felt the runtime was just right as I did feel my attention begin to waver on occasion. It was quite good, especially for an indie film. With great acting, a…

A GUIDEBOOK TO KILLING YOUR EX **** Hungary / USA / UK 2016 Dir: József Gallai. 71 mins A unique tale that took me by surprise following my viewing of The Poltergeist Diaries (2021), also from József Gallai. We are invited to follow a man (Balász Szitás) as he plots to kill his ex girlfriend (Tímea Virga) and her new man. This was a blog / found footage style horror, taking us through the journey as he prepares and researches. We get a great insight into the mind of an unstable man as he descends into a crazed insanity with…

THE POLTERGEIST DIARIES ** Hungary / USA / UK / Norway 2021 Dir: József Gallai. 76 mins When Jacob Taylor vanishes without a trace, those around him enlist the help of a detective and try to find him using the footage he captured prior to his disappearance. I do love a found footage horror, as long as it is done right. This is usually done by casting skilled but reasonably unknown actors and not hiring the likes of Eric Roberts to play a small role. For me, his appearance is when things began to unravel as it shattered the illusion…
