There’s an old saying that goes, “Good artists borrow; great artists steal.” While that quote is inaccurate, THE CULT MOVIE MUSEUM unearths two examples of great artists being influenced by past works, while creating masterpieces of their own.
1954’s THEM! was intended as a follow up to Ray Harryhausen’s 1953 classic THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS. Them became the first giant monster film produced with all the bells and whistles of a major studio, and its action-packed, army grunts vs indestructible monsters, finale inspired James Cameron’s screenplay for ALIENS.
1958’s IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE was intended as a cheap, drive-in feature, but it’s concept of a monster stowaway terrorizing a spaceship was pure gold. Screenwriter Dan O’Bannon took a good idea and made it fantastic with his screenplay for 1979’s classic ALIEN.
The CULT MOVIE MUSEUM will continue digging up great movies you need to see, so don’t miss out!
