    Film Review: THE UNHOLY (2021)

Poppy BlundellBy Poppy Blundell7th June 2023No Comments1 Min Read

THE UNHOLY ** USA 2021 Dir: Evan Spiliotopoulos. 99 mins

I think I’m being a little nicer by giving this two stars due to the lack of imagination and creativity. The film feels as though writer director Evan Spiliotopoulos had a basic idea and rushed to write the screenplay, prior to any story development.

The film does redeem itself somewhat with the casting of Jeffrey Dean Morgan to portray disgraced journalist Gerry Fenn, who is sent to cover a seemingly fake story. Instead, he learns about Alice (Cricket Brown) who is a deaf mute who suddenly has the abilities to hear and speak, whilst also gaining the ability to perform miracles for the townsfolk.

I could easily ignore the slow pacing but I didn’t feel this was intentional as there seemed to be very little tension.

If it had more original ideas, it would likely have held my attention.
