AGNES *** USA 2021 Dir: Mickey Reece. 93 mins
Another religious exorcism film that has some unique qualities, especially as there is a dramatic side to the storyline. It is peculiar in many ways, with a slightly slow feel as it builds tension and suspense at the start of the film.
The cinematograohy styles in the first portion of the film added to the unsettling feeling the audience face throughout. Mickey Reece and co-writer John Selvidge take a deep look into the effects beliefs can have on people.
Unfortunately this felt like two entirely different films that had a minor link between them. Had this not been the case, the film would have been rated higher. If you’re looking for a traditional horror, this isn’t it. The film doesn’t really fit the poster as it is far more of a drama than anything else. It would have been far more suitable to name the film Mary.
I absolutely loved Sean Gunn unexpectedly appearing on screen after I went into the film completely blind as to what to expect, other than thinking horror. He is a brilliant actor who deserves far more credit than he currently gets and not just because he is a Marvel actor. To me, he will always be Kirk from Gilmore Girls.
