Film Review: CANINE (2018) (Short Film)

Don AnelliBy Don Anelli24th May 2022Updated:24th May 2022No Comments2 Mins Read

CANINE ** USA 2018 Dir: Sean Richard Buddhe. 5 mins

While trying to track down his missing dog, a man (Ira Amyx) comes into contact with various passersby in his quest to find it. When a jogger (Sloan Davis) happens upon it, her good deed to return it to the owner puts her in great danger. Overall, there’s just not much to say about this. The fact that it’s so short that it barely has time to develop its central plotline or generate any kind of suspense or tension here since nothing gets the chance to go anywhere. The off-screen nature of the attacks serves as a cheat with only flash glimpses of everything taking place and the lone attempt at gore is hidden by a haze obscuring the finer details due to the point-of-view of the victim losing consciousness during the sequence. The focus on the dog makes no sense as he’s barely in it and doesn’t really serve any purpose or function at all so the title significance is quite strange. That said, it looks good and crisp with a fine technical sheen but being so short it doesn’t have the chance to go anywhere.
