Top Ten Horrors of Summer 2021
Independent horror comes in many shapes and sizes, and that is what truly makes it scary. We are going to explore some frightening indie films that may have flown under the radar but are non-the-less worthy of your screams. We could have picked more, but we were afraid your heart can only handle ten horrors. Let the summer fun begin.
10. HNN Presents: Everybody Gets Stabbed
Clive likes Lauren. Lauren has no idea. Desmond is in love with Clive. Clive has no idea. Lauren and her boyfriend Tom love each other very much. Clive doesn’t like Tom, because Clive was the one who put in all the friend coins and wasn’t rewarded with a relationship. So, with Desmond’s help, Clive decides to start killing all of their friends and blame it on Tom, and then maybe Lauren will realize she really loves Clive. And maybe if they hang out together Clive will fall in love with Desmond. It’s not the greatest of plans. And they’re not the greatest of murderers. But they’re going to give it a red hot go, because mediocre men always rise to the top. Everybody Gets Stabbed is a very dark comedy exploring the subject of toxic masculinity, sexism, and a whole host of other issues.
9. Devil In The Woods
A group of old friends come together to work on a media project, but as time passes and the deadline approaches, friction arises between them. Unfortunately they’ve also made themselves the targets of a masked cult, hidden amongst them.
8. Taxi 121
Based on real events in Czechoslovakia from 2014, Taxi 121 tells the story of a serial killer who targeted three taxi drivers in Prague. The official police version attributes the murders to a single perpetrator whose psychological profile is still under speculation. However, the threat of the killer has not yet completely disappeared, and becomes the impetus for the film, which masterfully draws you into the action, feeling a whole range of emotions from fear to courage to hope.
7. Devil Fish
When a spirit medium is called to exorcise a demon from a possessed man, he is unknowingly captured in the act by two students looking to document the process. The students accidentally release the devil fish demon into the world during their project, so it becomes up to them and the spirit medium to send it back to the hell from where it came.
6. My Autopsy
Rachel wants to love so much that she falls into an intense, abusive relationship with a local musician named Vince. When Vince’s true evil emerges, Rachel finally escapes. But even though she is physically separated from her abuser, she cannot break free from the emotional death grip that Vince has upon her mind. It’s sex, drugs, rock and roll, and stream of consciousness poetry with a dreamlike twist. Within even the most broken woman hides the strength to break out of the emotional cell in which she is imprisoned. Sometimes an emotional autopsy is necessary to fully realize our own power.
5. Todd
“TODD” is the story of a man who has always felt like the “odd man out”. From a young age, Todd is shunned and ridiculed by his peers. Over time his pain and anger turns into rage and despair. When psychoanalysis and depression drugs don’t work, the young eccentric becomes a morbid introvert, withdrawing from society in a downward spiral to insanity. He not only sets his sites on an aspiring young actress, but on his psychiatrist and the doctor’s family too. “TODD” takes you on a nail biting, edge of your seat journey into the mind of a budding madman.
4. Zombie Lover
A mad scientist, star-crossed lovers and a zombie plague all combine for a wild romp in the English woods. A deadly affair leads to a brutal murder which takes Dillon and Stacy into an evil world of the undead. Zombie Lover takes a hard turn from an impulsive murder tale and a body dump to a horror story that gets weirder and weirder as things progress.
3. Zombie King
In an attempt to bring his wife back from the grave, an ordinary man turns to voodoo and summons Kaifu, the God of malevolence. He makes a pact to destroy the underworld and bring chaos to the Earth and in return, he will become “The Zombie King,” walking the Earth for eternity with his deceased love. Now, with a town overrun by the undead and the government’s shoot-on-sight policy, a band of misfits must fight for their lives and unravel the mystery in stopping The Zombie King.
2. The Mill
An abandoned mill is the perfect location for sex, fun, and adventure for eight college kids. What they do not know is that they are about to enter a night of pure horror filled with snakes, wild dogs, tarantulas, and a pack of hungry rats. One by one their fate is sealed in this gore-soaked horror throwback.
1. Winifred Meeks
Successful writer Anna James rents a remote farmhouse in England to begin work on the latest of a series of teen crime novels – The Emma Hart Mysteries. Initially, the setting seems perfect, but soon her idyll becomes unsettled by the presence of an unquiet spirit – that of the former lady of the house, Winifred Meeks. As Anna delves into her writing – while a deadline looms – she also determines to uncover the history of the property and with that, unwittingly move closer to a disturbing confrontation with the tragic figure that continues to hold sway within the walls of Seaview House.
