“Survival is the Only Goal”: Mike Ferguson Discusses Grounding High-Stakes Chaos in New Thriller Blackout

LOS ANGELES, CA – Independent film standout Mike Ferguson (Showdown at the Grand, Amityville Uprising) is bringing a raw, visceral edge to the post-apocalyptic genre in his latest film, Blackout. Available now on Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video, the film follows veteran military couple Atticus and Maya Reed as they navigate the total collapse of society following a nuclear strike on California.

In a recent candid discussion about the project, Ferguson shared the physical and emotional toll of portraying Atticus Reed, a character he describes as a “believable badass” pushed to his absolute limits.

    Grounding the Chaos

To bring authenticity to the film’s premise, Ferguson drew on real-life emotional triggers, asking himself how far he would go to protect his family in a dire situation. He also emphasized the physical demands of the role, stating he “put my body out there” for the movie. The film’s scenario of global tensions leading to nuclear war felt “disturbingly possible,” adding to the intensity on set.

Authentic Tension and “Beast Games” Chemistry

The film’s tense atmosphere was amplified by the claustrophobic warehouse setting and long shooting hours. This was further enhanced by Ferguson’s long-standing relationship with co-star Twana Barnett, with whom he had just competed on the reality show Beast Games. Their real-life chemistry translated to the screen, providing a genuine sense of shared purpose.

    Motivation Beyond Greed

While the plot involves a $12 million crypto heist, Ferguson clarified that Atticus’s primary motivation is not greed but survival. He aims to get his wife to safety in Mexico, and the money is simply a means to build a new life amidst the societal breakdown.

    A Message of Humanity

Ferguson hopes Blackout ultimately highlights the importance of human connection during difficult times. He believes the film shows that while everyone is the hero of their own story, mutual support is essential for overcoming negative circumstances.

Blackout, directed by David Mitch Parks and produced by LeeAnne Bauer and Tyler James, is currently streaming on major digital platforms.
