EXPIRED *** Australia 2022 Dir: Ivan Sen. 102 mins
Of course anything involving Ryan Kwanten gets my attention due to his great talent. EXPIRED was thankfully no different thanks to the level of commitment and effort, as well as how diverse he is as an actor.
Writer Director Ivan Sen takes us to a futuristic world where Jack (Ryan Kwanten) is a demotivated assassin who wants more from life when he meets April (Jillian Nguyen). Strange things begin happening to Jack, leading him to contact Dr Bergman (Hugo Weaving).
Whilst this had a relatively low budget, it was very effective. Sen uses some great shots, often using close-ups to ensure the audience sees the high level of attention to detail.
Ivan Sen really can do it all. He covers many roles within the making of EXPIRED, including writing, directing, cinematography, music and editing. He does each one very well. The only downside, for me, was the pacing being a little too slow at times.
The effects were good for the limited budget (most of which likely went on casting) and weren’t overdone or overcomplicated.
This all resulted in an enjoyable sci-fi romance that most people would enjoy. I look forward to what Ivan Sen does next.
