VICIOUS FUN **** Canada 2020 Dir: Cody Calahan. 101 mins
Joel played by Evan Marsh a horror film critic finds himself in a sticky situation when he stumbles into a self-help group for serial killers.
Film critic Joel writes for a cult horror magazine and manages to find himself knee deep in trouble and in way over his head when he mistakenly lands himself in the self help group of serial killers. He must prove he is one of them at the risk of being a victim to one of the deranged serial killers. This time reality and fiction has truly blurred lines.
This comedy horror is something very different, the film itself oozes style with its crisp cinematography, neon vibes and on point production with sleek acting an 80’s style score to die for and great original concept for a comedy horror film.
Somehow Vicious Fun manages to be very clever at delivering homages to all things horror, much like the cult horror film Scream and Netflix’s Fear street. The delivery of every homage to all things cult horror is always understated which works very well here. The film is aptly titled Vicious Fun and the film is certainly that. It’s a fun rollercoaster ride of entertainment and much like its cast very likable not just to horror fans who really will adore this movie, but for the casual horror viewer who will just enjoy this indie horror for what it is. A light-hearted fun film with some very extreme gory themes throughout that will certainly surprise you. Vicious Fun is understated and most definitely an underrated horror film.
Horror comedy is very hard to pull of you have to much comedy without enough horror references you will not be a big enough draw for the horror crowd and too dark for the stand-alone comedy crowd, Vicious Fun mages to balance the horror comedy perfectly here.
I loved this film and will certainly look out for more from the director!
Vicious Fun is a slick, stylish modern masterpiece!
