They released it in 2007, and received tremendous critical acclaim and box office success, expanding and exploring the premise in a franchise and a U.S remake (remade as Quarantine starring Jennifer Carpenter, of Dexter and Dragged Across Concrete fame).
From the incidental way the film starts, as a film crew in Barcelona follow a fire brigade responding to an emergency call through to a frenzied and chilling climax, and now Arrow Video are releasing an edition which captures the descent into nightmare alongside a curated and extensive selection of additional features which will sate the most hardened horror fan’s appetite.
The extra features include a High Definition Blu-ray presentation with two viewing options: the “theatrical version” (24fps, 1080p, 78 mins) as shown in cinemas, and the “production version” (25fps, 1080i, 75 mins) as filmed along with original Spanish DTS-HD MA 5.1 and 2.0 audio options on both versions and optional English subtitles.
There is a new audio commentary by film critic and historian Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, author of Found Footage Horror: Fear and the Appearance of Reality. You will also have access to an archive commentary by directors Jaume Balaguero & Paco Plaza and archive interviews with the cast, crew and contemporaries of the New Spanish Horror movement such as Gonzalo Lopez Callego and Juan Antonio Bayona.
This edition also includes deleted and extended scenes, and deconstructions of key scenes in the film itself, alongside a video diary by the lead actress, Manuela Velasco.
The first pressing includes an illustrated collectors’ booklet with new writing on the film by Xavier Aldana Reyes, and a reversible sleeve featuring original and commissioned artwork by Adam Rabalais.
