Not to be missed in October on the expertly curated cult streaming service ARROW – Halloween treats aplenty with seven outstanding J-Horror chillers, a month’s worth of premium frights, including folk horror Sator and Wil Wheaton in Rent-A-Pal as well as Shocktober31, horror director Michael Dougherty and horror fest Celluloid Screams choose their faves, and more.
In October, exclusively on ARROW in the UK, J-Horror Rising, seven seriously scary films from the wave of horror and mystery films that emerged in Japan at the turn of the millennium, collectively labelled as ‘J-Horror’, featuring childhood trauma, urban legends, high school hysteria, deadly curses and folklore demons: Shikoku, Isola: Multiple Personality Girl, Inugami, St. John’s Wort, Carved: The Slit-Mouthed Woman, Noroi: The Curse, and Persona.
Also next month, folk horror in the form of Sator, about a supernatural entity in a forest trying to take over a family living in a remote cabin; atmospheric chills in Come True directed by Anthony Scott Burns (Our House); a gloriously gory remake of slasher classic Slumber Party Massacre; and two creepy and dread-filled odes to the days of VHS, Jacob Gentry’s unnerving Broadcast Signal Intrusion, and Jon Stevenson’s Grimmfest and Sitges winning Rent-A-Pal, starring and Brian Landis Folkins (Hoax) and Wil Wheaton (Stand By Me).
ARROW continues its commitment to showing the best in offbeat short films, with a selection of hilarious horror comedies – Blood Shed, starring Shaun Dooley and Sally Phillips, from Severance writer James Moran, the SXSW Film Festival Midnight Short We Forgot About The Zombies, and Marcus Meedt’s Werewolf, where a fun game amongst friends takes a turn for the peculiar.
Finally in October on ARROW, don’t miss the hilarious King Knight, written and directed by Richard Bates Jr, starring Matthew Gray Gubler (500 Days of Summer) as a new age high priest banished from his coven when his conventional past comes to light.

October 4: Michael Dougherty Selects
Michael Dougherty, the writer-director of of cult horror favourites Trick ‘r treat and Krampus and blockbuster creature feature Godzilla: King of the Monsters, chooses his faves from the ARROW catalogue, movies he says that are, “a little rougher around the edges, that might not be as slick and polished as their big multiplex counterparts, but are nonetheless just as important and valuable — if not more so.” His picks are cinematic gems, “that might be horrifying, revolting, and maybe even morally questionable, but they’re raw, unfiltered, and generally awesome.”

October 11: Trick?
Oops! You knocked on a nasty door. No sweets and candy for you, but instead a choice of plenty of Tricks. Be brave and pick a scary short film with a sting in the tail. After all, it’s Halloween. Everyone’s entitled to one good scare.

October 18: Celluloid Screams Selects
Celluloid Screams, North England’s premier annual horror film festival, celebrates the best in classic and contemporary cinema. This year’s event will run from the 24th to the 27th of October, and the Celluloid Screams team have scoured the ARROW vaults to handpick their fave Cult films in Celluloid Screams Selects.

October 28: J-Horror Rising

Secluded in a desolate forest, a broken family is observed by Sator, a supernatural entity who is attempting to claim them.

Plagued by nightmares, a troubled teenager signs up to a sleep disorder study. Hoping that will finally stop her sinister dreams, she unknowingly becomes the channel to a horrifying new discovery.

BROADCAST SIGNAL INTRUSION
In the late 90s, a video archivist unearths a series of sinister pirate broadcasts and becomes obsessed with uncovering the conspiracy behind them.
RENT-A-PAL
Whilst seeking a partner through a video dating service, a lonely bachelor discovers a strange VHS tape called Rent-A-Pal. Hosted by the charming and charismatic Andy, the tape offers him much-needed friendship. But it comes at a cost.

SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE
A slumber party turns into a bloodbath when a psychopath wielding a power-drill disrupts the fun. Slumber Party Massacre is a reimagining of Roger Corman’s 1982 cult classic.
KING KNIGHT
Thorn is the leader of a coven of new-age witches. Life is good. But when a secret from his past comes to light, it forces him to take a trippy journey of self-discovery.

WEREWOLF
A group of friends decides to play a casual game of ‘Werewolf’. Will they survive the night? Or will their secrets spill through the cracks of distrust and draw blood?

BLOOD SHED
When Jack buys suspiciously cheap second-hand parts to build his dream shed, he and long-suffering wife Helen find they’ve got more than they bargained for: a killer shed with an appetite for blood.
STRANGE CREATURES
Desperate to see her brother again, a young woman visits the site of his death.

CARVED: THE SLIT-MOUTHED WOMAN
Carved: The Slit-Mouthed Woman features the titular predatory murderess drawn from urban legend, where it turns out home isn’t the safest place for her potential child victims in this disturbing supernatural horror.
INUGAMI
A teacher from Tokyo finds himself drawn to a local papermaker, only to find himself the subject of some hostility from her extended family, who have long ties to the region and are rumoured to be the descendants of the guardians of ancient evil canine spirits.
ISOLA: MULTIPLE PERSONALITY GIRL
The aftermath of the devastating Kobe Earthquake of 1995 creates fissures in the already fractured mind of a high-school girl in Isola: Multiple Personality Girl, allowing an unwelcome intruder to set up home in her head and leaving a volunteer worker with psychic powers to determine which of her personas is the fake one.
NOROI: THE CURSE
The chilling Noroi: The Curse adopts a pseudo-documentary format as an investigative reporter into paranormal phenomena is forced to confront horrors beyond his wildest imagination after learning about an ancient folkloric demon.
SHIKOKU
In the ghostly pastoral horror of Shikoku, a young woman returns after many years to her rural birthplace, only to find her best friend from childhood has died by drowning when just sixteen. The dead girl’s mother, the local Shintoist priestess, has embarked on the region’s famous pilgrimage – but why is she walking backwards?
ST. JOHN’S WORT
Megumi Okina (Ju-On: The Grudge) plays the art designer for a horror-themed videogame in the innovative St. John’s Wort, who is forced to confront her childhood traumas when her colleagues ask her to gather visual materials from the creepy gothic mansion she has inherited from her estranged artist father.
PERSONA
A new craze for wearing ceramic masks sweeps the students of a high school, unleashing a wave of anonymous juvenile delinquency amongst the literal fashion-victims of Persona, which boasts early appearances from Battle Royale stars Tatsuya Fujiwara and Chiaki Kuriyama.
