VISIONS OF FILTH *** UK 2021 Dir: Jason Impey. 63 mins
Martin W Payne stars as a man dying from cancer – which going by later actions could possibly be anal cancer – your sympathy for this character will soon dissipate though.
As he traverses from his bedroom to the bathroom in several trips he experiences agonising pain resulting in him fainting. During these moments we see flashes of his past actions as a sick depraved killer. He may look like an ordinary middle-aged businessman but behind that demeanour is a very disturbed individual who seems to get off on his actions. As he regains consciousness he watches back his recorded footage as he pleasures himself, so we see A LOT of the killer masturbating but not being able to reach his climax. His killing escalates further to the point he rapes his victims but something eventually has to give in this world and in the disgusting final act the killer will get what is coming to him in one or another on his death bed.
This was shot for a 72 hour film contest which leaves you even more amazed at the quality of this film. Jason Impey is a master of shooting films on a budget and with VISIONS OF FILTH’s micro budget its shot well and he manages to fit character development in a 63 minute movie.
Kudos to Martin W Payne who spends a good 90% percent of the movie naked and a significant amount of time masturbating, perhaps this is his freebie from his OnlyFans page. Though in seriousness quite a lot of the films he stars in he gets naked and that is to be applauded in a world where people are more squeamish about getting naked in front of a camera, then having blood and guts thrown over them.
The dialogue what little there is (and I am speculating here) mostly by the killer, some of it and the actions in the film seem improvised but this adds to the appeal. There is several glimpses of Impey’s love for the genre with a notable nod to Dario Argento’s classic 1987 giallo OPERA in the peephole scene. VISIONS OF FILTH has an interesting soundtrack and the overall feel of the film feels like a ‘lost SOV film’ that has been remastered.
Rina Julia stars as the final victim and despite her being a new actress to the industry she has a presence about her that hopefully Impey or others will utilise in other films.
VISIONS OF FILTH is a suitable title for this disgusting film and a great introduction to Jason Impey’s filmography if your unfamiliar to his work.
