1970’s TV show THE INVISIBLE MAN materializes

Fabulous Films have released the 1970’s T.V series THE INVISIBLE MAN on DVD in the UK.

Inspired by the H.G. Wells novel of the same name and created by Harvey Bennett (Star Trek), this classic 1975 series features famed writers Stephen Bochco (Hill Street Blues), Alan J. Levi (Lois and Clark, NCIS) and James D. Parriott (The Six Million Dollar Man, The Incredible Hulk).

The DVD set contains all 13 episodes including the pilot episode.

The series aired on BBC1 in 1975. It was also dubbed into French, Persian, Italian and Finnish. Low ratings in America meant that the series was cancelled after one season even though it was a ratings hit in the UK. NBC did however commission a very similar series called Gemini Man using simpler and less expensive special effects.

Glasgow-born David McCallum who plays the lead role, earned fame in the hit 1960s series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. for which he received two Emmy Award nominations. At the time McCallum received more fan mail than any other actor in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s history, including such A-list figures as Clark Gable and Elvis Presley.

Now McCallum is most famous for his long-running role as Dr Donald “Ducky” Mallard in the hugely popular NCIS.

McCallum has a writing credit on Dr Dre’s iconic 2000 single The Next Episode which featured Snoop Dogg and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. The predominant sample in The Next Episode is taken from The Edge by David McCallum and producer David Axelrod, originally released on McCallum’s 1967 album Music: A Bit More of Me.

    Synopsis:

Dr Daniel Westin (David McCallum; Colditz, The Great Escape, The Man From U.N.C.L.E), working as a leading scientist at a U.S think-tank, discovers that the government intends to use his newly created invisibility formula for unspeakable deeds. With determination and perhaps not enough foresight, he renders himself invisible and destroys the only batch ever created and quite possibly any hope of ever returning to human form. Aided by his wife and a few remaining allies, Dr Westin becomes a crime-fighting agent bent on, not only protecting the world but finding a cure for his curse of invisibility.

    Cast:

David McCallum, Melinda O. Fee, Jackie Cooper (pilot episode only), Craig Stevens, Henry Darrow (pilot episode only).
