Exclusive Interview: Aswan Harris (Rebirth)
What attracted you to this movie, REBIRTH?
The passion Roger had about the project and I felt he really wanted me to be apart of that. Horror is Rogers world and the fact that he believed I could help carry the story made it an easy decision to come onboard. I also liked that it was a modernized version of Night Of The Living Dead because I liked the original.
Tell us a little about your character, Ben?
Ben is a good guy. He’s shocked by the turn of events and just wants to get home in one piece. He reminds me a lot of myself actually. Ben has a good heart and becomes protective of Adam. He knows the chances they have of surviving is slim; but he’s determined to do everything in his power to lead everyone to safety, even the bigot ?. Ben pays attention to detail and noticed how the ghouls move and react so, he strongly believes if everyone works together they can make it out of this situation.
How does this character differ from other characters that you’ve played?
well, Ive never done a horror film so that’s an instant difference lol. Outside of that. I tend to play both bad and good guys so he actually fits right in – Not that Ben falls under the bad guy category or anything like that haha.
What was your most difficult scene? Why?
The ending scene where I get bit was probably the most difficult scene. Primarily due to it being the very first scene i shot out of the gate. I had the bring the emotion. I appreciated it though because Rachel was locked in so it made it less difficult for sure.
How was it working with Roger Conners?
I had a blast. We made some magic. He was easy to work with and knew what he wanted out of every scene. He’s an acting director so he understands what we need as actors, and does a great job communicating that to us.
What was your favorite day on set? Why?
I can honestly say that I enjoyed every day on set. Did you see the zombies? Oh my God! They brought it. Rachel, Alvin, Jim, Roger . . . I mean there were no weak links. Everyone was good and a pleasure to work with so it truly made every day enjoyable. I almost wish I could pin point one specific day for you but I really did enjoy every day.
What movie or event from your childhood turned you on to the film industry?
it wasn’t one movie per say. I’ve always loved movies. I remember when I was in the Marine Corps. I was stationed at camp Fuji Japan. I remember buying movies blindly, without even seeing them. I would just collect movies with my favorite actors.
Name your top 3 horror films on all time?
Damn that’s hard but I’ll go with Nightmare on Elm Street, Childs Play, and Friday the 13th. I will say it was tough cutting out poltergeist, IT and Carrie. But I picked the ones I did because they made sequels and I watched every single last one of them ?
Who inspires your creativity?
I don’t really draw my creativity from one source. I draw it from wherever I can honestly. I like to be present in my scenes and be believable so I tend to get my creativity from the actor or actors in scenes with.
What’s next for Aswan Harris?
Honestly. . . I can’t say. What I can say is no matter what it is, I will make the most of it and have a blast doing it. This was my first horror film and honestly I would love to do another one, as long as I don’t die in the first couple of minutes ?. I would love to do a comedy so that’s what I’m manifesting.
