VENGEANCE The Hybrid Series – Book 3 by Nick Stead
Book 3 of Nick Stead’s Hybrid series finds teen werewolf Nick trapped in a death trap-filled dungeon by the Slayers. His vampire ally Lady Sarah and her sister, the witch Selina are nowhere to be found. In their place is another vampire, a pirate named Captain Zeerin who is trapped with him. Together, they make their way through the torturous maze holding onto the thin hope of survival.
Vengeance paints Nick in a more human light than any of the previous books. He’s controlled, remorseful, and collaborative with his growing team of fellow prisoners that he meets during his escape. This is the longest story of the series, and a lot of fat could have been trimmed from it. The narration continues to veer off course with every conflict, combing through the abundant “what-ifs” of Nick’s thoughts which slows down the action and tension. The dialogue tends to be over-expository as well. There is still plenty of detailed gore and torture around every corner along with satisfying reunions, the introduction of new creatures and horror-based worldbuilding, and a more concrete ending that still leaves the story unfinished but with a more capped off conclusion.
