HUNTED The Hybrid Series – Book 2 by Nick Stead

After the epic battle between the human creature-hunting group known as the Slayers and the small but powerful collection of paranormal beings, teen werewolf Nick retreats with his vampire ally, Lady Sarah, on the run from the Slayers until he can control his feral nature during the full moon. Hiding out in the woods, Nick and Lady Sarah take turns hunting and protecting each other while they sleep. But Lady Sarah’s cold, distant nature creates a loneliness in Nick that causes him to seek out companionship. However, in the human world, his predatory nature takes over, creating an endless body count of human kills. And when vampires start turning up dead as well, Nick becomes the main suspect. He is summoned to emergency vampire meetings in order to plead his case, but the growing body count after each full moon doesn’t look good for his innocence. One vampire, Leon, offers his sympathies, companionship, and protection from Nick’s prime suspect, a mysterious witch who lives in the woods nearby.

While book 1 of the series, Hybrid, focused on Nick’s werewolf origin story, Hunted continues with his werewolf infancy. Still getting the hang of his shapeshifting, murderous nature a year after his attack, Nick comes to find that being a werewolf doesn’t offer the freedom and excitement that he thought it would. Most of this book is a cat-and-mouse game between Nick and the Slayers, Nick and the vampires who distrust him, and Nick versus his own guilt and loneliness. Just like Hybrid, the meat of this book is full of long-winded descriptions and over-explanations by the narrator with an epic ending that admittedly does leave the reader curious as to what happens next.
