THE SLASHENING *** U.S.A. 2015 Dir: Brandon Bassham. 82 mins
When best friends Lucy, Eva, Ashley, Beth and Margot have a sleepover they expect nothing more but to have a drink a laugh and just generally a good time. Unfortunately for these lonely girls, someone thinks that the good times shouldn’t roll on, but be cut dead. Sounds like many a slasher film for sure, but this one plays it a little different right from the start with a horny milf and husband trying to get their way with the local teen gardener which ends badly for all of them leading in to the title screen.
The characters are way out there but they do have some great names, and the red-herring killer in the film will have you laughing. Perfectly executed throughout, the film plays more on the comedy aspect then horror, but that isn’t to say that the horror elements are not there. Look out for some special effects which remind me of early 1980’s shot on video stuff, especially a eye gouging scene that had me thinking of the 1971 movie ‘HEADLESS EYES’, unfortunately for said victim the killer does not stop there. Finding a film that can be funny and not be a parody is hard to come by, but the writer and director Brandon Bassham (Fear Town, USA) manages to make this comedy slasher film that will have you laughing from beginning to end.
