What’s a high school kid got to do to be popular? Just let down his hair and howl!
Michael J. Fox (Back to the Future Trilogy) stars in the 1985 classic 80s cult comedy Teen Wolf.
Although filmed prior to Back to the Future, Teen Wolf (which cost less than $1 million to produce and was filmed in 21 days) was released afterwards to capitalize on Fox’s leading role in the big budget, high profile Back to the Future movie. Teen Wolf opened in second place at the box office on its first weekend behind Back to the Future which had been released a month earlier. The film grossed £33 million worldwide on its tiny budget giving a better return on capital than Back to the Future which grossed $381 milllion on its $19million budget.
Living in the shadow of Back to the Future, Teen Wolf was re-titled “O Garoto do Futuro” (“Boy from the Future”) in Brazil even though it has nothing to do with time travel. In Italy Scott (Michael J Fox) was renamed Marty the same as Fox’s character in Back to the Future.
Michael J. Fox had a two week crash-course on basketball for the film but could still barely make a shot, forcing the producers to hire sophomore basketball player Jeff Glosser as a body double, who also had to wear the makeup for up to 12 hours a day.
Teen Wolf spawned a sequel called Teen Wolf Too in 1987. Michael J. Fox refused to reprise his role so Jason Bateman took over as lead playing Scott’s cousin Todd. A Teen Wolf animated series ran for two seasons from 1986-1988. MTV ran a Teen Wolf series for six seasons from 2011 to 2017 while Teen Wolf: The Movie streamed in January this year (a continuation of the series).
