THE OUTWATERS * USA 2022 Dir: Robbie Banfitch. 110 mins
Well another horror film has hit the world and whisperings of the film being so gruesome people are throwing up in cinemas. It’s the kind of sensational claims that movie fans look at in two ways: 1) Wow, it must be really gross. or 2) That sounds like utter media talk rubbish bet the film is trash. Well the answer is sadly that THE OUTWATERS sits firmly in the second statement. So what is this film about, well…
Four travellers head to the Mojave Desert to film a music video. They are never seen again. The resulting film is made up of footage that the police have recovered from the camcorders memory cards. Cue, lots of footage of the friends talking, walking, camping for nearly an hour of the movie before anything of note happens. Then things start going a little odd and very incoherent, loud noises heard throughout the night, flashes of light and then the friends end up in darkness for the third act with lots of people whimpering and screaming while covered in blood. What is this place they have travelled to and experienced? Well I guess we need to work that out as THE OUTWATERS leaves the viewer with more questions than answers. You will come away thinking you missed some footage along the way in this over indulgent, exceedingly long and over-hyped entry into the found-footage genre.
So the plus sides of the film is that it has great sound mixing that would be the envy of any Hollywood movie, the poster looks pretty cool and the songs sung throughout are worth listening to. Outside of that there is little to recommend watching this film unless you have a desire to see every found-footage movie ever made.
