Australian Writer/Director Heidi Lee Douglas’ contagion short Devil Woman has premiered on Alter after a festival run that saw it lap the globe from Fantasia to Fright Fest, Morbido to Monsterfest and onto Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival.
Devil Woman has taken on new meaning with recent world events, where an endangered animal spawning a deadly contagion is now a story-line humanity is tragically living through with Covid-19.
“Devil Woman is definitely a cautionary tale, but I honestly didn’t expect it to mirror real life as much as it is”, says Douglas from Sydney Australia.
The short draws on Douglas’ frontline experience as a documentary filmmaker who got caught up in the Tasmanian forest wars, whilst the real life Tasmanian devil Facial Tumour Disease was being discovered.
Fantasia Film Festivals Mitch Davis selected the short for its’ World Premiere as part of the acclaimed Short Gauge Trauma block, calling it “a propulsive eco-horror scream with urgent political pertinence from the award-winning maker of LITTLE LAMB”.
Produced by Catherine Williams, Devil Woman stars Marigold Pazar, Flame Kimbell, Peter Healy, Shaun Anthony Robinson and was shot on location by Director of Photography Meg White.
Douglas is currently writing a contained 3 hand thriller feature, whilst also attached to direct Vizpoet’s The Oppression, which she describes as a “girl in a tower” possession movie with disturbingly relevant social issues themes.
Douglas is represented by Ed Hughes at Linda Siefert Management, London.
