In 2010 Joe Johnston directed THE WOLFMAN (starring Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt, Anthony Hopkins, Hugo Weaving, Geraldine Chaplin, and Art Malik) was released. On 28th October, Fabulous Films will release the extended cut of THE WOLFMAN which includes 17 minutes of additional footage not shown in cinemas.
THE WOLFMAN was inspired by the classic Universal film, THE WOLFMAN (1941). Make up artists Rick Baker (Batman Forever, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, The Nutty Professor) and Dave Elsey (Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge Of The Sith) won the Academy Award for Best Make Up (Baker’s 7th Academy Award).
Baker said it wasn’t difficult to transform del Toro because he is a hairy man anyway:
“Here we have Benicio del Toro, who’s practically the Wolf Man already, to Benicio del Toro with more hair and bigger teeth.“
Voice actor Frank Welker performed the growls of the werewolves. Welker has been the voice of Fred from Scooby-Doo since 1969 (with one exception). As of 2002 he has been the voice of Scooby-Doo too. He also voiced Santa’s Little Helper and Snowball II in The Simpsons until 2002.
The film was originally set to hit cinemas in 2007 but after Joe Johnston was signed on three weeks ahead of filming, the release date was gradually put back finally to be released in 2010. The late start was one of the main reasons Johnston gave for employing CGI in the werewolf transformations much to the annoyance of Rick Baker.
The bear owned by the gypsies is recycled animation from The Golden Compass, the Polar Bear being changed into a Grizzly.
Filming took place at Pinewood Studios, Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, Castle Combe in Wiltshire, the National Trust village of Lacock in Wiltshire, Stowe House in Buckinghamshire, Foggintor Quarry on Dartmoor, and the Old Royal Navy College, Greenwich.
Synopsis:
Lawrence Talbot (Benicio Del Toro), is a haunted nobleman who returns to his family estate after his brother’s fiancée, Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt), begs him to help find her love. Reunited with his estranged father (Anthony Hopkins), Talbot sets out to find his brother… and discovers that a beast with an insatiable bloodlust has been killing villagers, and that a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named Aberline (Hugo Weaving) has come to investigate. But as he hunts for the nightmarish beast, Talbot discovers a horrifying
destiny for himself.
